Plug In Stereo Interview

We caught  up with Trevor Dahl of Plug In Stereo while he was on the Love Is All Around Us Tour. Learn about the time he broke vegetarianism, working with Christofer Drew, and more about the new album! Make sure you check out the band’s debut album on April 12th!

Introduce yourself and what you do in the band.
My name is Trevor from Plug in Stereo, and I write all the music, play guitar and sing.

Can you tell us a secret about yourself?
I don’t have any secrets!  Well I’ve been a vegetarian, have been for three years.  I’ll tell you about when someone didn’t know I was a vegetarian!  About a year and a half ago my tour manager at the time was like ‘Here’s pizza’ and I was like ‘Cool, pizza!’  I took a bite into the pizza and there was ham under the cheese, not cool!  I took a bite of it and I was super sick so I broke my vegetarianism for one bite.

Do you have any funny stories from high school experiences?
Yeah I do, I have a lot of those!  Well I didn’t finish high school, first off. I stopped after my sophomore year and started doing some online classes and junk, but as you can tell I hated high school, which is probably why I left.  When I was in my sophomore year I was writing music and there was this guy, this was the worst experience of my life…I was walking through the cafeteria minding my own business and this guy was like “Hey Trevor!” and I was like “Yeah?” and turned around and everyone was looking.  “He was like ‘I heard you make your music blahblahblah’” and he started yelling all of these corny love lines out that weren’t even mine, and it was the worst experience of my entire life.  That was probably why I ended that year.

How did your collaboration with Cady Groves come about?
My sister was going to be the original vocalist on the song Oh Darling.  I wrote it at home, we recorded the demo and she sang on it.  I went to Missouri to record my album and Cady was recording her album at the same place and the same week as I was.  The producer, Kevin Gates, had the idea.  He was like “Hey we should have Cady sing on it, I think it would sound perfect.”  She came into the studio the next day, tried it out, we loved it and that was that!

Do you have any other collaborations coming up?
Not yet…I want to do another duet, I think it would be kind of fun to do that for the next album.  Nothing yet but hopefully, we’ll see!

Who and what inspires your music?
Honestly anything.  My songs could be a story about me, a story about a friend, or some story that I make up, most are from personal experiences through.  Some of them, like a song called Plans is about my sister and her boyfriend.  I love Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Taylor Swift, all that stuff…I love The Shins, Modest Mouse.  Singer/Songwriter stuff a lot definitely.

What is your best childhood memory?
Going to Disneyland when I was little and watching The Lion King Parade!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully doing what I’m doing right now!  If not, you know shit happens; I want to be writing for others, recording others, producing others, managing another band… obviously be in the business it’s all I know and all I care about.

You have a new album coming out, tell us about it.
Yep!  The album comes out April 12th.

What was the recording process like for that?
After I left high school I had this booking agent at the time who called me and he was going to have me on all these tours and I was like ‘Okay cool!’  So I left high school and he ended up dropping me and didn’t get me any tours.  I talked to my manager and I just wrote an album at home for like 3 or 4 months, went over to Engaged Audio in Springfield, Missouri and recorded with Kevin Gates.  We just recorded those 9 songs there and after that he wanted to make it a little longer so we recorded 2 more songs at home, one of them was Plans and the other was Together.

Are there any surprises on the record?
The song Together, I co wrote with Christofer Drew from Never Shout Never, that was fun.  I also worked a lot with Jordan from The Ready Set.

What are your plans for the rest of 2011?
Hopefully just touring a bunch because my debut album comes out April 12th so hopefully just going to be doing that a lot and just touring constantly.  I’m writing my second album so we’ll record that in a couple of months and keep writing demos for that too.

Do you have any tours after your run with The Scene Aesthetic?
Not that I know of…well actually after this one we’re doing 2 weeks with The Ready Set on the Glamour Kills tour.  I’m really excited for that, it will be cool.  We’re opening and playing acoustically so it’ll be a little bit different but it’ll be cool.  We’re going to play Bamboozle, just the one show on the third day.  That’ll be crazy, that will be a great experience and I’m excited for it.

Anything else you’d like to add?
Check out the album April 12th and thank you for your support!
